Question About Sun Loving Malibu Barbie 1979

by Rebecca Berlin
(Sweden)

I have two Sun Loving barbie's (you know the one with the ''tan lines''). One doll has bendable legs while the other has ''stiff'' non bendable legs, does anyone know the reason why?

I just remembered. There was a later issue Malibu PJ (1982?)with straight, hard legs and tan lines. The Barbie of that issue year most likely had the same.

I don't think that any actual "Malibu" Barbies were made with straight legs. In the 70's there were several dolls sold in Europe and Canada (as well as a department store special from Kresque,"Barbie and her fashion fireworks") that used the Malibu Barbie face mold and had straight hard legs, but none of those dolls had tan lines, and they were lighter in color than the Malibu Barbies. Perhaps that is what you have? You might consider submitting a picture to get more advice.

I know that the bend leg Sun Lovin' dolls were sold in 1979, because that's what's written in Sybil DeWein's second Barbie book. I THINK (although I can't be sure) that the straight leg dolls were sold in 1980. I have straight leg versions of Barbie, PJ and Skipper.
