Question About Vintage Barbie Doll Outfits with White Fur Stole

by Cathie Murphey
(Atlanta, Georgia)

The Barbie gown from the early 1960's, called "Enchanted Evening", was sold with this white fur stole. Is anyone aware of this same fur stole being sold in combination with any other Barbie outfits during the same time period?

Hi Cathie -
Gay Parisienne #964 (1959) and Junior Prom
each had a white stole, but they were lined in white satin. The only other item that included this stole was a Fashion Pak from 1962 called "Fur Stole with Bag" that also had gold clutch purse.

Question about Barbie white rabbit fur stole

by Pat
(Helena, MT)

I have a Barbie white fur with the pink lining. I know there are Barbie white furs with a white lining. I am wondering if you can tell me what the difference is between the two and why the white lining seems to have a higher value. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi Pat -
The white fur stole with white lining was included with Gay Parisienne #964 (1959) (which was only made in 1959 and was one of Barbie's very first ensembles) and also Junior Prom #1614 (1965), so it is much rarer and therefore more valuable.

The white fur stole with pink satin lining was from Enchanted Evening #983 (1960-1963) and also a Fashion Pak item from 1962 called "Fur Stole with Bag" that also had gold clutch purse. They are much more common and easier to find.

Gay Parisienne tm tag
by: rose

I have the complete first issue gay parisienne. Both the stole and the dress are tagged t.m. There are a lot of variations. I have been the only owner of this outfit, actually passed down from my older sister. I have to say I resent it when the experts say only one of the pieces should be tagged. That is not true. Depending on whether it was a mon. morn or fri. afternoon, there were lots of mix-ups at the Mattel factory! Maybe after the first ones were issued, mattel just got lazy and said tag one of them! But take it from someone who is the only one to have ever owned this outfit.

Question About VIntage Barbie Gay Parisienne White Fur Stole

by kathy
(tn)

Did the white fur with white lining ever have a label in it that had TM? My Gay Parisienne outfit has the white fur with white lining and a TM label. On Ebay there is Gay Parisienne oufit and the owner states that there never was a white fur with white lining for Gay Parisienne with a TM label. Is this true?

WHITE FUR STOLE
by: Susan K

I have read in several different books that the original Gay Parisienne stole did not have a label at all.

Gay Parisienne stole
by: Anonymous

I have never read that the first version of Gay Parisienne had an unlabeled stole. I have all the first fashions of 1959 (age 10) all are labeled, including the white stole that came with Gay Parisienne. I must have sold dozens of the fashion and never came across one unlabeled. I'm very interested in reading about this, would anyone be so kind to give me a title? Thank you. D

Question about white fur stole for Gay Parisienne

by Elizabeth Koch
(Silver Spring Md)

I am trying to find out if the fur stole for Gay Parisienne is supposed to have a Barbie label or not.

Hi Elizabeth -
It has always been my understanding that the White Fur Stole for Gay Parisienne #964 (1959) did not have a tag. In Vintage Barbie Doll ensembles, only one item is tagged. In Gay Parisienne, the tag was located in the dress.
Junior Prom #1614 (1965) also had an untagged white fur stole with white satin lining.
Which brings the question where do the tagged, white lined white fur stoles come from? My understanding is that the Pak fur stole from "Fur Stole with Bag" (1962 - 1963) was lined with pink satin. I see on two of the three vintage, complete Gay Parisienne listings currently on eBay, they have tagged stoles, BUT the tags have the (R) AND Barbie tags from 1959 should have the TM & not the (R) after Barbie's name - so now I am confused as well. Is there anyone who can clear this up for us?
Thanks-
Suzanne

Tag for Gay Parisienne
by: Teresa

Hi, I believe the Gay Parisienne Fur stole does have the Barbie tag (The dress AND stole both have one, which is unusual) while the Junior Prom stole is untagged. The 1959 GP outfit was tagged TM but later in the year, it was changed to R. (I own the vintage GP outfit and it is tagged Barbie R on stole and dress!)

Hope that helps-
Teresa

Thank you Teresa - That helps a lot!

I don't know a lot about this subject, but it seems to me that recently a lot of these barbies and outfits have been reproduced. Maybe to save confusion (or maybe to cause it LOL), the latter ones are marked differently. I've heard that mattel is good about making sure the reproductions are easily identifiable. I don't know how they do this but maybe this is one way.

(Note from Suzanne - the reproductions have the word "reproduction" on the tag.)

I have an original outfit that I bought when I was 13 (in 1961
) and both the dress and stole have the barbie tag on them.

GP stole or Junior Prom stole?
by: Ellen

I have a white bunny fur stole with satin lining with no tag in it. I (of course!) was hoping it was the elusive GP stole. Now after reading the posts here I am thinking it must be Junior Prom (if it is Barbie at all?)

I agree with Teresa
by: Travis

All of the GP fashion stoles I have came across that are intact from the original owners ALL have the tag and the JP does not have the tag. The PAK fur does not count as it has a pink lining like Enchanted Evening (which also has a tagged gown and stole) There are also a couple of variations of how the R version of the GP stole tag is labeled as sometimes it has the (C) in front of Mattel and other times it does not (the latter being more rare).

Don't know if my other comments went through so just in case. First versions of GP were tagged t.m. in both the dress and the stole. Later versions had variations but not the first issues.
