Mattel fashion doll, but which one?

by Sheri
(Daytona beach, fl)

Copper red hair (long-ish) with short strands around face and side part, blue eyes, painted eyelashes, slightly open mouthed smile with teeth. Fair skin, straight arms, offset twist body, bendable legs. Stamping on right butt cheek says: 1966' ; Mattel, Inc; U.S. patented; U.S. Pat. Pend.; made in; Japan. Left butt cheek says 13. I received her from my babysitter back in the mid 70's. She was well played with then. Her hair had been cut and her original clothes were missing. She had no packaging. I am sure she is not worth anything, but I've had her all these years and would just like to know more about her. Any help would be appreciated.

TNT Stacey

Hi Sheri - Lucky you, you have a beautiful TNT Stacey doll and yes, she is worth something!

Thank you Suzanne
by: Anonymous

Thank you Suzanne. I wondered if she was, but the descriptions for TNT Stacey mentioned "rooted" eyelashes and this doll has painted eyelashes. Since your comment, I have read a bit more about the TNT Stacey doll, and do remember the swim suit being in the box of Barbie clothes. I spoke to my sister and she too remembers seeing it, but , they have all been thrown away. Too bad. Thank you again for your help and this wonderful site.

Identification Help: 1970s Barbie

by Julie
(Princeton, NJ)

Could you help me identify the year and which Barbie this is? This blonde-haired Barbie has brown eyes and light brown eye shadow. Most Barbies I've seen have blue eyes and blue eye shadow. Her arms are straight, not bent at the elbow. She has the 1966 trademark on her right buttocks with the words Mattel, US patents pending, made in Taiwan. She twists and turns at the waist. Her head moves in all directions. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Julie-
Your doll has what is known as the "Steffie" face and with the brown eyes, it is most likely a PJ Doll. The only brown eyed PJ with a Steffie face on a TNT body I can find is "Deluxe Quick Curl PJ" from 1976.

p.j. doll....
by: christina

hi julie!!

i believe what you have here is a "free moving" p.j. head on a "quick curl" body.

it all depends on the texture of this doll's hair. if it is very rough & frizzy feeling, than you have a "quick curl" or "deluxe quick curl" p.j. doll.

but if the hair is soft, shiney, and moves easily when you shake your doll, than this is a "free moving" p.j. head on a taiwan issued "quick curl" body.

that is what it looks like to me & i am comfortable in giving you that information.

she originally came with a longsleeve red with white polka dots on shirt and light color blue jeans and shorts both with very light pin stripes. she had camping gear also and I believe white tennis shoes. yellowstone because of the camping of course. she is in one of my barbie books. I had her as a child.

But the marking on her butt is 1966 with the patent and so on but says Korea.

1958? midge doll?

by Karen
(Oklahoma)

Her bottom is stamped midge looks like 1958. is that possible? by mattel inc. then patentd. very faded Japan on the bottom of her right foot. Her hair is red and longer than any pictures I am finding of Mige. Also she has a small smile with teeth showing. blue eyes with real lashes. I have looked for a value on ebay but I cannot even find a midge with teeth anywhere. her legs are straight. she has some nail polish left but sadly has been disfigured as her right pinky finger is missing. Still I think I will box her up and save her. My camera is down so I cannot add a picture right now. Please email me if you have any idea if she is a real vintage midge and where I may be able to get a value on her. Thanks!!

Hi Karen -
Without a picture I'm afraid I can't help you. There were Midge variations that had teeth. You should be able to identify her as Midge from this page - Vintage Straight Leg Midge Doll.

Midge
by: Anonymous

Midge was barbie's best friend for a few years until she was cancelled. Midge dolls with their teeth showing are extremely rare! So that may make up a bit for the missing finger also are her eyes looking forward or to the side the most common is forward. Most Midge dolls with teeth do have longer hair so the long hair might not have its own seperate value. Midge can be valuable if she is in the right conditions however you might want to get her touched up a bit if possible. I am pretty young for a doll collector but I have been doing tons of research and I do know a lot about the dolls. I hope I helped

blue eyes & real lashes.....
by: christina

to me, it sounds like you might have a "mod" era red-haired "stacey" doll head on a "vintage" (straight-leg) midge/barbie body.

the reason i say "stacey" is that no "midge" doll ever had any "real" lashes. all "midge" dolls had a small eyelash ridge, not as big as the vintage "barbie" eyelash ridge, but "midge" only had an eyelash ridge, never real eyelashes.

the real eyelashes makes it a "mod" era doll. and the only "mod" era dolls that had red hair & blue eyes, with teeth showing was the "stacey" doll. there were red haired versions of:
walking "jamie" (but she had brown eyes) and no teeth showing.
"barbie" came in red haired versions & had blue eyes but didn't have any teeth showing.
"p.j." had brown eyes & never came with red hair or any teeth showing.
the only "barbie" friend, from the "mod" era (real eyelashes) that i can think of that had teeth showing was "stacey". and "stacey" came in 2 versions;
blonde or red hair.

sorry for the long message. i hope it helps you identify your doll though.

Vintage Talking Truly Scrumptious Doll Identification

by Brandi
(Arkansas)

Ok the identity of this doll has continued to elude me! I hope you can help.
She has blonde hair, no bangs. Blue eyes, with real eyelashes. She has a curious shaped mouth, so I'm not sure if she is Barbie or a friend or relative. She looks a little like Francie, but Francie has brown eyes. She does not twist at the waist. She has a pink flower pull string on her neck and speaker on her back, but she does not work. She has straight arms. She is marked on her bottom : 1967 Mattel Inc. U.S. & Foreign Pats Pend Hong Kong.

Hi Brandi -
It looks like you have a Talking Truly Scrumptious. The doll is based on a character of the same name from the movie Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. It was released in 1968 and is considered to be very rare. It was made with the France head, using blue eyes instead of Francie's Brown ones. Here they are on eBay

I recently found a standard Truly doll, unfortunately she has had a haircut, and has two gashes on her face :( she is still rather beautiful and since i love the movie, im glad to own her!

Upon doing further research I found that Mattel also released a plush 'Mr Potts' doll to accompany truly and also a model Chitty car. If only they made a 'Mr Potts' Ken doll!

Truly Scrumptious

This was one of my favorite Barbies when I was young. I, too, am from Arkansas. Several years ago my hometown paper had letters to Santa from 30 years ago, and mine was in there asking for Truly Scrumptious! I do still have her, but my best friend & I were some Barbie girls and, unfortunately, the dog chewed on her hands & she has other miscellaneous wear & tear. I wouldn't part with those dolls I played with so much anyway!!

(Troutville,Va,USA)

I recently got a "lot" of lovely ladies, all who I remebered like peek-a-boo malibu,P.J.,Sun-loving Malibu,Francie, and this lady which I don't remeber nor have I been able to find a picture on the internet or book to help me identify her.She does have a "tanned look" and on her behind it says "1966 Mattel inc. Us & Foreign Patented other pats pending made in taiwan". She also has a slanted TNT waist.I don't thing her earrings are original, they appear to be straight sewing pins cut to size. Her hair does not appear to have been cut,and yes,she does need a arm,but she is a BEAUTIFUL lady with a gorgeous face! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance! ~Jill

Question about 1977 Fashion Photo PJ Barbie

Can you tell me if she originally came with a camera and movable stand?

I think Fashion Photo P.J. from 1977 with the beautiful Steffie is one of the prettiest Barbie dolls ever made. She came with a 2-piece modeling stand & cable that was attached to a black camera. She pose is changed by turning the lens on the camera. She also came with pre-printed photos.

Help with the official name of this Doll

by Cindy
(Upstate New York)

1963 Mattel Inc on right butt cheak, Number 1 on the Left butt cheak. She has straight Legs and straight arms, Flat Chested, Flat Feet. Her eyes are blue. Closed mouth grin. Molded reddish hair...originally I think I remember her coming with wig but that was to many years ago for me to be sure.

Hi Cindy -
It looks like you have a Wig Wardrobe Midge (1964) on a Straight Leg Skipper Body. Midge should be on a Barbie body. If you can find the correct body, it should be fairly valuable as this Midge can be very hard to find. Suzanne

Thank you. I was guessing that was going to be the outcome. I think someone must have done that before they gave her to me as a child. After posting the question, I realized my description of her happend to be mine as well in the late 70's when I played with barbies. :) My daughter who has long grown out of Barbies, says this one was always her favorite because she is so unique.
Thank you again!

Wig Wardrobe Midge
by: Martha

Hi, I have to say that this Midge - Wig Wardrobe Midge - was sold only as a head with 3 wigs on a wig stand. She was supposed to be used to change heads on any straight leg Barbie doll the little girl already had. That's why I suppose every now and then you see Skipper bodies with this head on ebay. Also one of the 2 versions of Fashion Queen Barbie was sold as head alone and with 3 wigs on a wig stand but I have never seen one of them on a Skipper body up for sale. I think it's because of Midge's more childish looking face :)

Help with Vintage Doll ID?

by Brett Schwartz
(Dauphin,MB,Canada)

I recently found this doll in my attic. Any help (year, name, etc) would be greatly appreciated. Logo found on buttocks states "1/Mattel Inc/1958/Korea" On the underside/flatside of head it states "mattel Inc/Korea" Also on the bottom of the feet there are holes/indents where it looks to have been pegs of some sort when it was made. The one logo picture, I adjusted color and tone so the printing would be more visible.

Thank you for your help

Can you help me identify my Barbie with teeth smile and ash blonde hair?

Back of head says c MATTEL INC. 1979 Her hair is a dark or dirty blonde, maybe ash blonde? Her eyes are blue, purple eyeshadow, painted eye lashes, tan/light brown eyebrows. Her lips are light pink and it seem to be wearing off, leaving them the color of the face. Teeth show in her smile. Inside head around the neckline says 1979 PHILLIPINES.

The body seems to be TNT, with PHILLIPINES and the common 1966 inscription. She has bent arms and bendable knees. Her feet have holes in the bottom. Her right hand has a hole for a ring and her left hand has a wedding band on it. Unsure if came that way or someone did it themselves.

Any help would be great! Thank you

Hi -
Barbies were made in the Philippines between 1978 & 1988 so your doll will be from those years. I do not recognize her - but she looks more like a Skipper than a Barbie to me. Is she on a Barbie size body or a Skipper size body? It could be a Skipper head that has been paced on a Barbie body.

mystery doll
by: Amber

She's on a Barbie size body but yes her head could be from another body. The neck joint is loose inside the head. I will focus on searching between those years, thank you. I know that many bodies say 1966 because of the patent. Could the head say 1979 because of a patent too? This doll is a mystery lol

i read it wrong. :) thought you said they were made in phillippines between 1988-1989 until i reread it after already replying. :) so ignore the part about the patent. :)

1979 Taiwan Painted Gold Ring on Left Hand
by: Anonymous

My Doll is described similar. She has Beautiful Ash Blonde with Blonde hair, it's a 2 Tone hair Color. She has bendable arms & a Gold painted Ring on her Right hand and a hole for a ring on her right hand.
She has a Barbie Body also with Mattel Inc 1966 Taiwan on her lower back and Mattel Inc 1979 behind her neck. I will read other comments on the mommy doll because I think that's what she is. My doll looks very unique but a little similar to the Steffie Face.

doll
by: debbie

it looks to me from the picture that the head had been broken off and someone put another one on the body.when you see a doll that looks like it does not have a neck, check, because the head has usually been broken off and someone replaced it with something else.

She has basic barbie feet standard size, her arms are down to her waist with her hands sticking out just a little. she has earring holes in her ears. Tried to google her but no luck

I also have a doll exactly like this one. Her head is also a bit loose. She has a green checked polyester type dress with daisies....small breasts, holes in feet, etc. Also Philippines. Unknown Barbie W/Blue Halter Dress

by Anna
(Oregon)

I got this barbie from a thrift shop. Don't know anything about it. I have been trying to look it up but have been unsuccessful. It has a blue halter top dress with a butterfly decal on the front. Painted black eyelashes, deep blue eyes, ginger hair, soft light pink/skin-toned plastic, bendable knees, slightly bent but unbendable arms, no markings on head, and markings on the behind saying 'mattel inc, 1966, hong kong, 9'. Is there anything you could tell me about this doll? Is it even a barbie? or is it a midge, francie, etc? Thank you for any information!

Hi Anna -
Although I'm not sure which ones, I believe you have either a Steffie or PJ doll from the early 1980s. Your Barbie has the "Steffie" face. The inside rim of her head should be marked (c) 1971. Barbie dolls were made in Hong Kong from 1970 to 1987.
I am not familiar with the dress.

Hi Anna,
I found this exact doll today, but nude. Same markings on the butt & same head/hair.

Have you found out anything more since commenting here?

the dress....

this dress is either a late 1970's or very early 1980's "best buy" barbie dress.

the the doll is definitely a "sun gold" malibu p.j. doll.

I want to know what her original shoes looked like?
exactly.
pale pink pilgrim shoes I know but
