Need help figuring out if my bubble cut barbie is old or reproduction.

She is a very dark brown hair bubble cut with pale pink lips, bendable legs, straight arms. The question is about the markings on the right cheek. It reads c. 1958, Matel, Inc, U.S. Patented, U.S. Pat. Pending.
Any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks, Lana

by: Susan K.

Yes, you have a vintage American Girl Bubble Cut Barbie which I think is hard to find from around 1965.

Orig.
by: Anonymous

Yes she is original. And from the looks of her she may be one of the first from the line with this hair style. The second release had really really thick hair. It was hard st part it to see the scalp.

This is an original, and a good one
by: Siansonea

This is 1965 Barbie With Lifelike Bendable Legs, with the uncommon variation of having Bubblecut hair. In all likelihood, this doll was sold this way, rather than being a composite doll. The face paint is definitely 1965 all the way. Great doll!

hi my name is irina creaser.i used to have over 800 barbie dolls between 1959 and 1990. the doll body you discribe is the body of a 1966 bendleg-or american girl barbie. but the head did not come on this body. there was no bubble cut with bendable legs. the american girl has straight hair to the shoulder

markings on vintage Barbie
by: NM

Hi I just purchased a vintage Brunette curly bang ponytail Barbie on EBay however it appears that someone scrubbed her markings off her butt barely to show so it's unreadable you can see there's something there but only someone who knows about this doll can say what year she was made.
However there is a mark on her feet that says Japan! How much of value does this doll have without her markings on her butt? Does anyone know? Thanks nm

Question about Vintage Barbie with Bun

by Kim
(North Carolina)

Side view

Side view

This is my grandmother's Barbie - I have not found any other Barbie dolls with hair in a bun. This hair has not been fashioned into a bun by the owner of the doll - it's obviously like this from the factory. See pictures. My question is - what number is it? I'm thinking it's a #5, but have not found any like it. Is it more rare and/or valuable to have the hair in a bun? Marks on rear-end are “7” on left cheek, “Barbie PATS PEND ©MCMLVII by Mattel” on right cheek.
Many thanks for any information.

Vintage Barbie with Bun
by: Anonymous

The butt markings of a #5 are Barbie R Pats. Pend. CMCMLVIII by Mattel Inc. The markings of a #4 are Barbie TM Pats Pend. CMCMLVIII by Mattel Inc. Really bothers me that your doll doesn't have an R or TM.

by: Anonymous

It may be that I just can't see it - it's so faint and it's hard to see it.

I have a #4 Barbie with a bun. It was factory made with the pins still in place.

Barbie Bun
by: Anonymous

I had read somewhere that Mattel never wasted anything, so, if the doll's hair came up too short for the ponytail, they would either braid it or put it in a bun.

Help on #4 or #5 Barbie
by: Anonymous

I just got a number 4 Barbie but it has an R next to it, like the number 5. Her head is lovely, not greasy and soft hair so I think it is a number 4 and not a number 5. Which really confuses me is that her body is heavier not hollow like all the other number 5s.. Can I have a number 4 with a number 5 body? Were some number 5 bodies not hollow? Could I have a number 5 Barbie nongreasy face with a heavier body? Much Thanks!

#3 with braided bun w/original pins
by: Anonymous

I have a #3, B 59 on left buttock, patent pending right buttock, she has a braided bun from factory (it is secured with 2 stick pins. This Barbie was my birthday present when I was 7 years old - she has always looked the same, I never changed her hair

Barbie with a bun
by: Anonymous

I just received a blonde Barbie that appears to be a #5 with soft hair and firmer curly bangs with face similar to #3 eye paint, brow and shadow. She appears to have a bun! The bun is anchored with 3 straight pins that have caused greening of the top of her head. Seem to have never been removed. The bun seems to been wrapped around (like the doll on this page) rather than rubberbanded and pull out and tucked under. The hair is equal in length. It does not appear as if it were a poneytail that was cut because there is no piece of hair typically seen that wraps around to make the top knot and usually separates clearly from the other hair on the scalp. I believe this was originally a bun. Never seen one until now. She has hollow body. Markings are Barbie, Pats Pend, roman numerals by Mattel. They are very worn, difficult to see. I can not see a T.M or a R by Barbie and Barbie is the clearest print of the entire marking. Left butt looks like "B" or an "8". Does anyone know about the history of the Barbie with a bun, her markings etc. Curious that someone else mentioned on this page that they could not see a TM or R next to Barbie. Love to hear any thoughts on this. Thanks

I to have 2 barbies that appear to be white Gingers - neither of them have a TM or a R??
The other WG I have has a TM.

Was wondering how that came to be? Thank you

Question about Fashion Queen Barbie Head / Neck Rim

by Kristie Lynn Rehnig
(Philadelphia, PA)

Hi Suzanne. Thank you for putting up this beautiful, fun, very useful site! - This is not an identification question, but I was not sure where else to pose it within your pages. I do have a few pieces I would not mind help identifying, and I will come back with questions re those when I have taken the pictures of those.

My question today is, I do have an original fashion queen doll with most of the pieces/accessories, but problematically the head is not presently on the doll, and the rubber on the neck opening seems awfully stiff. I have tried gently/and with moderate force to push the head onto the doll's neck joint, but it seems not to want to go. It is stiff and tight. Is there a good way to loosen the neck opening/soften the rubber without hurting the doll piece? Otherwise, would you advise trying to force it somewhat harder. I know neck splits are an issue and am afraid this could result if I force it too much. - Any advice on this is very welcome. Thank you!

Kristie

Hi Kristie -
I would try soaking the head rim in warm water for a few minutes to see if that would soften it enough to put it on.
Good Luck!

Please Help My Teacher Identify Her Vintage Ponytail Barbie Doll

by Alexandra
(Michigan)

Her Pretty Face

Her Pretty Face

So my teacher, of whom grew up in the '60s, told me she had a vintage Barbie. I, being a hopeful new collector, asked if I could see it. She brought the doll in today to show me. When I saw her, I knew she was older than I first anticipated. I had no idea she'd be a ponytail.
The question is: Which ponytail?

Her markings read, "Barbie T.M. Pats.Pending, (c)MCMLVIII, by Mattel Inc." As they should. Her eyes are blue with little white dots in them (please see picture), and she has traces of blue eyeliner. Her skin is light, but I cannot decide as to classify it as faded "ivory", or as a light tan.

I believe she is either a #3 Ponytail or a #4 Ponytail. I do not think she is a #5 because her vinyl is not shiny, and I do not believe she is a #6 or #7 because her markings indicate this.

There are a few interesting factors to this doll, however. I am new to all of this, so please bear with me if I say something incorrect!

She has no piercing holes on her ears, and no earrings. Obviously the earrings could have fallen out, but it is odd to me there are no evidences of holes.

Her foot also says Japan. I didn't know if this was normal or not. It is to my understanding that only #1 Barbies have holes in their feet, so I don't believe it's abnormal for this doll not to have holes. I was wondering if the dolls were all produced in Japan, or if maybe she was a Japanese version or something?

You can see a close up of her eyes/mouth/nose shape in this photo. I didn't know if the blue residue was considered eyeliner or if it was eyeshadow. I know if it's eyeliner and she's a #3 like I'm thinking, she'll be a bit more rare. If it's eyeshadow, that would be normal for #4, correct? ^^;

She is in her original striped bathing suit. She may or may not have her stand (my teacher has to look!) but no box. Unfortunately, because that too could have told me something! >.<

If you can help me with identification, I would really appreciate it! Thank you so much for taking the time to look! I hope I can give my teacher an answer soon!

I am pretty sure she is a number five! Not all fives have greasy faces. The indicators are the bangs, not right for a three or four, and the red lips. She is really a beauty. A little restoration and she would be stunning

Vintage Ponytail Barbie
by: Sandy

Your Teachers doll Looks like a #5 some do not have the shiney greasy face her bangs give that away if the doll were a #4 the body would be solid with the same markings . the #4 also has tighter cirley bangs . Your teachers doll is georgeous. I do beleive she is a #5 hope this helps
Sandy

Ponytail
by: Liza

The body is from a #4, they had the TM marking and were solid. Later dolls had the R in a circle and the hollow bodies. The head looks newer, the bangs looks more like a #5. At least to my knowledge... The head and body could be switched which happened a lot when kids played with the dolls.
She could perhaps be a transitional doll, when one type of head was used up in the factory they added the newer type of head to the "older" type body. According to Krista's Doll Restoration there is a type doll that has a #4 body to a #5 head. Anyway, she's a very pretty doll!
Hope this helps!

by: Rita Smith

Hi,her head looks like a #5. The body if it says tm and is heavy and solid. It possibly could be a transitional #4. If her body is hollow than she is a #5. I believe the #6 came in a red bathin suit.

Rita

Ponytail doll
by: Liza

I forgot another tip for knowing what # her head is... if she has flocking underneath her hair on her scalp, she is a #3 or 4. If she has no flocking, she's a #5 or newer.

Hope this helps!

Greetings from Liza in Sweden :-)

Definitely a #5
by: Siansonea

Probably an early issue #5, the torso is obviously hollow, and she has the non-greasy face and smaller lips of the early #5s. Her torso might be very brittle, so handle with care, some early #5s have torsos made with a rather cheap plastic that doesn't have very good tensile strength.

I have a barbie that has 1958 stamped on it,and yet you state they debuted in 1959.Any explanation about my doll? She has the holes in her feet for the rod's,and her legs flex.

Pleas see - Number One and Two Ponytail Vintage Barbie Doll for Barbie body markings - all of the early Barbies were marked 1958 (MCMLVIII) - the year they were patented. There was never a Barbie that had holes in her feet and bendable legs. You doll head is a Vintage Bubblecut Barbie.

Barbie with Bendable Legs

Question about vintage Midge doll markings...
by: Rikitik

I got my first vintage Midge doll. A Christmas gift for my self. And my problem is, when I checked her right butt, she had no 'Midge' on her markings. The only markings there is Barbie t.m. Pats. Pend. (c) MCMLVIII by Mattel Inc. Is this possible or someone swap Midge's head to a ponytail Barbie doll body? Thanks.

Bubblecut bendleg
by: Anonymous

I have a Lemon Blonde Bubblecut with the same markings and bendlegs. She came in the American Girl swimsuit with turquoise shoes. I bought her on Ebay from someone in Indonesia.

I have read that there were a very few bubbles that had these markings and the bendlegs.

Bendable Legs
by: Melanee M

Yes, there most certainly WAS a Barbie that had holes in her feet and bendable legs. (The holes in the bottom of the feet were the place the wire was inserted to make the legs bend.) I'm a collector, but I'm going from personal memory here and not any "official" information. I remember getting my first Barbie with bendable legs in the early to mid 60s and it was a BIG deal to those of us who were little girls at the time and wanted her legs to bend so she could sit down! I can still remember the "clicking" sound they made when you bent them. It was supposed to make her "poseable," but the legs were made of rubber to allow for flex, so the doll clothes didn't slide on easily with those models. I don't remember what year they went back to the original straight, hard plastic legs, but they were bendable at least through the 70s, I think.

Bendable Legs
by: Melanee M

Forgot to mention... they also added a "twist n' Turn" waist to her body in the late 60s for even more poseability. Didn't work out too well for whatever reason and I think this was the only model to have the feature. (I had one, of course.)

Looks Like A Barbie But Is It?

Hi,
Perhaps you can help me with this identification because it is an awfully daunting task for a novice person. She was either my childhood doll or my sister's doll so I know she's the right age to be a Barbie but she has none of the classical markings and before I throw her away I want to be sure.
So, she looks like a Barbie and acts like a Barbie but her body (butt) markings only reads “C(with circle around it) 1958 Mattel, Inc. U. S. Patented, U.S. Pat. Pend.”. She also has some tiny numbers on her upper inner arms. My research is showing that Barbie was introduced in 1959, however this 1958 date is confusing to me.
Her head is not currently attached to this body so I'm not sure if they belong together.
Thank you so very much!

American Girl or Miss Barbie
by: Charlene

Hello!
The head you have doesn't go with that body. Do the legs bend? They should. The body you have is either an American Girl body or a Miss Barbie body. Both are highly collectible especially if the legs still bend and click three times. I beleive the 1958 represents some sort of patent for Mattel. Just like many barbies from the 70ies and 80ies have 1966 in their bodies. It doesn't represent when it was made but when the body design was patented. Hope that helps!

don't throw her away!
by: Amberae

please don't ever throw them away! Even if it's not a real Barbie or if you don't know again, somebody will want it. If you don't wanna go through the selling process, give it to someone. I'm glad you asked before you threw her away. She's beautiful!

Yes, but wrong body!
by: Teresa

Hi, You have a #5 or 6 Ponytail Barbie head and a bend-leg body which is also authentic Barbie, but the wrong one for the head. This head should have a straight-leg body. The body usually goes with an early American Girl Barbie. But both are definitely authentic!

Ponytail Barbie #3, 4, or 5 with "19" stamp on left butt

Trying to identify my old Ponytail Barbie. She has the markings described in #3, 4 & 5, but also has the number 19 stamped on her left butt cheek. I haven't seen anything about what the number stamp means. Body color has not faded. Do not have original earrings. Pictures attached. Can you help???

Thank you!

Those numbers are basically meaningless - please see What's the number stand for that is stamped on left side of Barbie's bottom? for more info.

Your Ponytail Barbie #3, 4 or 5
by: Liza

Hi!
I think your Barbie is a #4. The #3 and 4 has simular bodies, but since yours hasn't faded I would put my money on a #4. The #5 Ponytails has lighter, hollow bodies and larger curled bangs.
Hope this helps!

The aqua-colored eyeliner identifies your doll as a #4 (rather than a 3), since the blue eyeliner used on the #3s, is a true-blue that's absent of any green.

Barbie Doll that says Midge and Barbie with #19? on left cheek

This doll came with pink striped bathing suit and has the marking #19 on left cheek and on right cheek says Midge and Barbie with a copy right of 1958.

Hi Kathy -
Your Barbie is a Swirl Ponytail from 1964 - 1965. The pink & white suit is not a Mattel / Barbie item - they came with Barbie Clones (cheaker knock-off dolls). The number on the left cheek is meaningless - see What's the number stand for that is stamped on left side of Barbie's bottom?

I've had a round Barbie case since 1960 or thereabouts and have never seen another round Barbie case--only the standard rectangular. Are the round cases that rare?

Your lovely doll & her markings
by: Suz

The year on barbies rears & backs indicates the year for that type of body style- not the year the doll was made necessarily, for example the year 1966 is common to see on several barbies from all through the late 60's, 70's, and 80's,(I think 90's also) as they used that body style for many years. It is so confusing that they did that, and most people don't realize it until (like I did)they do some research on it. I discovered this when I was looking through my old assortment of 1980's dolls that I know were not from 1966 since I picked them out brand new at the store as a child!
And as far as your doll goes, the person is correct, I can tell right away by the hairline, the way it dips down on her forehead (with no bangs)you can see how it is meant to "swoop" up to the side and then up into her cute ponytail, and by the details of her face. You should be proud to have her, the swirl ponytail is a very glamorous doll, I really wish I had one! Hope that helps, take care.

I think this doll is a Fashion Queen Barbie. Does she have a wig on? The Fashion Queen came with three wigs and the hairdo on this one looks like one of the wigs.

by: Anonymous

If the bottom of her foot id stamped 'Japan' she is probably a 1962 - 64 swirl ponytail whose hair has been cut. Moust of these dolls have 'green ear'. I just sold a similar doll (uncut hair, no green ear or chew marks) on eBay for $180.

This is either a "Fashion Queen Barbie" head or a "Wig Wardrobe Barbie" head wearing the brunette flip wig of "Miss Barbie". One can tell it is a Fashion Queen or Wig Wardrobe Barbie due to her large upper lip and smaller lower lip.

The body sounds like an earlier body though.

Looking for ID (approx year/name) of my first Barbie

by Cindy
(New Jersey)

Hi -- I'm embarassed to show how I mutilated my first Barbie doll by chopping her pageboy and bangs into some sort of shag...as well as cutting down her plastic eyelashes (yikes.) But I would really appreciate a dating for her, her model name, and the color name of her hair if possible (It's probably not obvious in the photos, but her hair has a little of a gray tinge in the dark blonde.) She has bendable legs, red nail polish, 1958 on the butt; there are also numbers in the inside of each arm...don't know if that means anything. I was born in 1959, and I think she's from the early-mid 60s. The dress I've shown in the pic may or may not have been hers originally, so if anyone recognizes it that would also be appreciated.

Obviously, she's in rough condition, but she's got sentimental value to me, even with the bad cosmetic surgery I performed on her as a child :)

Hi Cindy -
It looks like your doll is an American Girl Barbie from 1965 - 1966. I don't recognize the dress.

Susan Manos dolls
by: Angela

Hi, the only thing I can imagine that these dolls are from the huge high quality doll collection of Susan Manos which was sold years ago. Susan and Paris Manos wrote some really helpfull books about Barbie, her family and friends in the 60ties up to early 80ties. The doll on the pic looks like an old Skipper dressed in a pajama from the 60ties.

Hope this helps a little,

Susan Manos Dolls
by: Anonymous

Hi As far as I know Susan Manos never manufactured or had any dolls made in her name. She was an author, collector, and dealer along with her husband Paris of Barbie Dolls and GI Joes. She was a personal friend of mine and I had the great opportunity of seeing her vast collection in her home years ago before she sold them.

Susan was my mother
by: Carol Manos

Hello Barbie Lovers.
My mother Susan Manos sold her collection to Marl Davidson in mid 90's. Marl boxed the dolls and placed a silver label reading "From the Manos Collection" on each doll and if the doll were featured in one of the books written by Susan and Paris, the page number that doll appeared on was noted. Marl was excellent when marketing these dolls for resale.

My mother started collecting Barbies again shortly after. She amassed some pretty amazing dolls AGAIN. When she passed in June 2003, I packed them up and currently have them in my possession.

I am currently devoting my time to cat rescue work. One day when my funds dry up....probably sooner than later, I will be selling her dolls. When that time comes, I will likely be posting then on ebay and listing them specifically as Manos Collection Dolls.

Until that time, if you like cats and want to see what the buying and selling of dolls has enabled me to do with my life, please visit carolsferals.org. My mother turned a dime into an empire. I seem to be really good at helping animals so dolls is on my back burner. One day....I will return to the family business. Till then, I have a lot of cats to fix.

Bubble Cut Body/Head Question..

by ruthe
(ontario, canada)

I have recently been doing a lot of research on barbie, and have been collecting random barbies - not vintage yet - i actually just ordered a fashion queen barbie.. which is my first vintage.. but my question is.. ive been looking at getting a bubble cut, the markings are listed as follows:
Markings are (R in circle) Midge 1967-Barbie (R in circle) 1968 by Mattel Inc. Patented - all on RIGHT BUTT. and on LEFT BUTT is 11. JAPAN on her foot.

from my readings on this site and others, most bubble cuts were made until 1967. would this mean the head was most likely switched? its coming from a single owner (who had received it as a child) and states that this is how it was.
(sorry for bad pictures, thats all that she gave me)

Hi Ruthe -
I think you maybe misreading the Barbie markings - sometimes they are very hard to read. I think it says:
Midge T.M.
©1962
Barbie®
©1958
by
Mattel, Inc.
Patented
As per - Vintage Barbie Bubblecut Dolls -
There was no Barbie doll that I know of with the markings you describe, so I would say check them again with a magnifying glass.

Can you identify this Vintage Barbie Doll for me?

She has red hair, and the markings I can find on her are on her right butt cheek. The right butt cheek is marked "Barbie (in cursive), PATS PENDING, MCMLVIII, BY MATTEL INC.". She has stiff legs and stiff arms.

To me, it looks like a Color Magic Barbie head on the first Vintage Barbie Doll body. They were used in 1959 & 1960, before Midge on Ponytail Barbie Dolls & Bubblecut Barbie Dolls.

The reason I think it is a Color Magic head is because of the hair color. If you take her head off her body, it should have
Copyr. © 1958 Mattel Inc.
printed on the inner rim if it is a Color Magic.

Has my Bubblecut Barbie Doll's Body and head been swithced?

by Wendy Piklor
(Mchenry, Il.)

Barbie with Coral lips marked Barbie (R)pats pend (C)with all the letters and numerals by Mattel inc

Barbie with Coral lips marked Barbie (R)pats pend (C)with all the letters and numerals by Mattel inc

Hello,
I recently purchased this doll from ebay. She is a Bubble cut (no side thatched part) from what I can tell. I think her hair is considered reddish blonde or Titian. She has blue irises, coral/pink lips that match her nails and toes. Her ears look pierced but no green ear what so ever. Her eyebrows come very close to matching her hair.. just slightly darker. My concern is is her body been switched? She is straight leg with /Barbie (R)pats pend (C)with all the letters and numerals by Mattel inc. Japan is on her right foot only. I've been searching and it looks like all the Barbies with that marking should have red lips but, while asking other ebay sellers the markings of there doll that have the same lip colors as mine they tell me /Barbie (R)pats pend (C)with all the letters and numerals by Mattel inc. same as mine . And I also saw that on this site as well. So could it be possible not all barbies with the Barbie (R)pats pend (C)with all the letters and numerals by Mattel inc. marking have to have red lips? Sorry for the confusion. Look at the pics please :)
Thank you,
Wendy

Hi Wendy -
I always tell people that Mattel was making toys, not collectibles and there are almost endless variations - as they changed styles they would use up whatever they had - so if they ran out of heads before bodies, your doll could be the result. On the other hand, it was a toy before it was a collectible, so the head could have easily been switched - I remember changing my Barbie doll's heads & bodies around. In my experience, the bubblecut heads on Barbie only bodies generally have smaller, tighter hair. There is really no way to know.

Question about Vintage Barbie Markings

by Cheryl Craig
(Olney, IL)

I have what I think is a #2 Vintage Barbie. The markings on her right buttock are Barbie/Pat Pend/C MCMLVIII/BY/MATTEL/INC. On her left buttock is the marking: B208. On her right foot: JAPAN. Could you tell me if these are markings for a vintage #2 Barbie. Also what does the B208 mean?
Thank you.

Hi Cheryl - Here are the Vintage Barbie Markings.

Here is the info on the other number - What's the number stand for that is stamped on left side of Barbie's bottom?

This doll does not have bendable legs. She has "japan" stamped on her bottom right foot and on the back of her neck she has two curves between her ears. Her butt markings say Midge and Barbie.

Please see Vintage Barbie Dolls for help identifying your Barbie doll. It looks like she has an American Girl Head on a Vintage Straight Leg Barbie Body.

Hello,
I have the same barbie as you. I know it's an original because it was given to me when I was young. Mine has also straight legs and on her behind is the mark with Midge 1962 Barbie 1958 Mattel ??????? patented. She has also marks on her armpits. On the behind of her head she has the same mark as yours.
This is my second response, I think the first one didn't worked.

I have the exact same doll with an American gril head and a midge marked straight leg body. I've been seeing this combination on a lot of dolls and I've started to believe the theory about people switching American girl heads with s.l bodies is not correct. I've also noticed a sligtly different haircut in these dolls.

She Has Cotton Soft Curly Bangs. Her Eyes Are Are Hard And She Has Blue Eyeshadow And Red Lips As Well As A Red Dot Under Each Nostril She Doesn't Have Holes In The Bottom Of Her Feet For A Stand But Her Right Foot Is Marked Japan. She Doesn't Have Earings In But There Is A Dot Hole That Is In Each Earlobe. She Doesn't Have Green Ear. She has a (c)opyright symbol with M.I on her neck. She has another(c)opyright symbol 1956 Mattel Inc US Pat Pend on her butt and foot. She is wearing a brunette wig. She looks a little more pale than my 1961 Barbie. (and all of the other ones I have seen older than 1961) I have NEVER seen one with rocker eyes!! They open and close. I have not heard of a Barbie that was made with rocker eyes!

Question about Bubblecut Vintage Barbie Doll

by Lin
(Yatesville, PA, USA)

I found this doll mixed in with some vintage Barbies in an old doll case. She looks like a bubble cut to me (though I admit I'm no expert), but she has a twist-and-turn body and knees that seem like they ought to bend, though I'm haveing a hard time with them. She is marked Mattel 1966 Philippines. Is this a repro or authentic or what? Thanks.

------------------------
Hi Lin -
This looks like a Vintage Bubblecut Barbie head to me - it appears her head has been placed on a newer body - Barbies were made in the Phillipines from 1978 to 1988, so the body would be from those years.

Question about Fashion Queen Barbie

by Patty
(Cloverdale, Oregon USA)

I don't have a way to send a picture of my doll, however she looks like the one in the upper left hand corner of your web-page. The brunette with painted hair, in the gold and white one piece swimsuit with the turbin. She came with 3 wigs, blonde, brunette and redhead. I think she has a Midge logo on her hip, but when I look at the Midges on your site she didn't look like them, then I saw the picture and realized that was her. Is it a Barbie or Midge? When was it manufactured?

Any info would be appreciated.

Fashion Queen
by: ingyandbert

Yes, it's a Fashion Queen. You can't go by the dates on the butt, those are patent application markings rather than the actual date of production. Many dolls say 1958 even if they were produced years and years later because that is the date of the patent application. The Fashion Queen is not a rare doll but it is very collectible and you can get vintage wigs to replace the originals if you shop around.

Thanks!

Question about the arms of my #4 Ponytail Barbie

I hope you can help. I have aquired a #4 Ponytail (flocking under the hair, solid body, Barbie only body). She came to me with soft, pliable arms. None of the barbies I have possess this type of arm, much like that of a Tressy or Tammie doll. Any vintage Barbie I have seen has arms more rigid like her legs. Can you shed some light on this for me?

she is dated 1958 she has a hole in each ear for earrings. Her hair is all attached but it only fringes her face the back of the head is bald and smooth so i am assuming the hair is just suppose to cover over it since it is not missing any hair as the back of the head is completely smooth with no hair holes but is stamped mc 391 on top of her head.

Vintage Barbie Ponytail Identification Question

by C. Maxwell

I got this for Christmas 1959. Original outfit was striped bathing suit. Pearl post earrings. Blue eyeliner soft eyebrows. red finger nails and toe. Soft blonde hair. Barbie T.M. Pats.Pend. (c)MCMLVIII by Mattel Inc. on right butt. B 8 on left. no holes in feet. Open toe high heel. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi -
If she has blue eyeliner & blue eyes, she would be a #3 - Vintage Barbie Ponytail Comparison Guide - she also seems to have the characteristic ivory skin tone. I'm not sure about the earrings - they should be hoops - but remember Mattel was making toys, not collectibles & there are many variations. Does she smell like crayons? What a beauty!!

1962 Barbie - mint but was head replaced?

by Kris Shaw
(North Syracuse, New York)

Question:
Greetings! Attached is a presentation with 4 pictures that show my 1962 Barbie which seems to be all original, except for the head, unless the back of the neck did not have hallmarks. Her neck is clean of any Hallmarks. I purchased this doll several years ago in the box with stand and earrings wrapped in tissue paper. The description on the box would lead me to believe that this is her original head. Thank you so much for any help you can lend. Appreciate it! Kris Shaw

Barbie or Midge?

(Portland, OR)

First described is on right, second on left.

First described is on right, second on left.

I have one doll that has shorter dirty blonde hair, blue eyes, her eyes are sort of sqinted, red nail polish, and has a thin face.
The other doll has longer dirty blonde hair, more of a doe eyed look, less red lipstick, and no painted nails, and has a wider face. Which is which?

Hi -
The Barbie on the right is a Bubblecut Barbie. The doll on the left is not from the Barbie/Mattel family. I believe it is one of the Fashion Dolls made in the same era by Ideal - I think it is a "Grown Up Tammy" (different from the regular Tammy dolls.)

Hello,

My name is Julian and I've been holding on to a 1964 Barbie collection including Skipper, Gidget (i think) and Ken along with accessories, clothes and case. This collection belonged to my mother when she was young. Unfortunately my mother passed aways many years ago and this collection has been in storage. I'm considering parting with it but have absolutely no idea the value on these items. Any information you have would be great!

Thanks,

GREAT collection!
by: Suzanne - Fashion-Doll-Guide.com

Hi Julian -
I think you will find your collection to be quite valuable. Your dolls in addition to Ken & Skipper, are a ponytail Barbie & Midge. You will be able to identify all of the dolls & clothing on this site & you can search the completed listings on eBay for their value.
To make the highest amount of money, I highly recommend selling the dolls & outfits separately on eBay & offer international shipping - many vintage Barbie collectors are overseas. Barbie collectors - all over the world - are truly the nicest people you will ever meet, so don't be nervous!
Good Luck!

Barbie ID - Bubble Cut Barbie with No Earrings

NO EARRINGS

NO EARRINGS

Question:
hello, i am confused with this barbie ,, could you tell me the year and number please? her but marking is,, barbie circle-r---pats pend---with a circle-c-mcmlv111-by mattel inc. and on the other side a number 9,,,,her nails and toes are the same color as her lips, but she has no pierced ears,, straight leg, also really nice condithion,,she is 11 1/2 inches long and seems to be hollow, she has the word japan on the bottom of her right foot, is she a vintage barbie? and if so what year and number? thanks so much,

answer:I have never heard of a Bubblecut with no earrings. You can see the different Bubblecuts here - Vintage Barbie Bubblecut Dolls.

I think while your doll is on an older body (1961) she is from the later era (1963 - 1967) because her hair is bigger than the earlier ones & her coral lips. She has possibly been repainted, as she has coral lips. The earlier "barbie only'" bodies has red nails & lips.

As far as no earrings, I suppose it could have either been a factory error or perhaps if her earrings were removed very early on the holes may have closed up. As far as I can recall, there has not been a titian/red head Bubblecut reproduction.

Bubble Cut w/no Earrings

I got my 1st Barbie in 1962, she was a Brunette Bubble Cut with no earrings. My sister had a Blonde. We always wanted them to have earrings and would put straight pins with colored heads in the ears. That's why so many dolls have green ears. There were definately Bubble Cuts without earrings at that time.

Is Color Magic Barbie Vintage or a Reproduction?

hello and Thank You for being there:}

My question is; I purchased a color Magic head (only). The head does NOT have the (c) Mattel 1958 on the rim of her head? Does this mean it is a reproduction?
The seller is waiting for me to leave them feed back, i was emailed and told that they could NOT receive the payment for this purchase until i leave them feed. so could you please Help Me!
Thank You, Tammy

Hi Tammy -
Every reference source I have indicates that the inner rim of the Color Magic Barbie was marked (c) Mattel 1958. But there are always variations. The Color Magic heads being sold on eBay look vintage to me - they do not look like the Mattel Color Magic Reproduction (which had dark hair). You would be able to tell by looking at the inside if it was a reroot instead of factory original hair.

Questions About Vintage Barbie Dolls

by Tonia Crutchfield
(Bakersfield CA)

I found the set of 3 pairs of gloves, 2 purses 2 sets of shoes. They are dated on the back 1963. I have searched for a # for them. Nothing comes up. Just wondering what if any the value is. It also has a little catalog with it showing fashions for sale marked 1962 printed in japan. I also have two barbies 1 is marked on butt 1958 with blond brown hair legs bend. The other one is marked midge for barbie raised on butt 1962 dark brown bubble cut hair legs do not bend polish on finger nails. I found all these at a yard sale a few years back and put them in a box with my own old barbie stuff. Any info would help...Thanks Tonia

Hi Tonia -
The brunette is a Bubblecut Barbie, The blonde is an American Girl Barbie. The gloves, purses and shoes are a Pak item called "Costume Completers" from 1964 - 1965. Pak items did not have item numbers.

The value is largely determined by the condition - the best way to determine the current value is to search for similar completed items on eBay.

Miss America Quick Curl Barbie...different box
by: donna

I have a Miss America Quick Curl Barbie in the original box (blonde). I have found several on the internet but the box is not the same as mine. Every box I find has blonde haired barbies on it. My box has brunette haired barbies.... just wondering if this might be a rare one and any idea of value (since I can't find it ANYWHERE). Thank you!

Hi Donna -
Some of the boxes have brunette hair on the graphics - I have never seen a distinction made between the color of the hair in the drawings on the box. The one in my collection is a blonde doll with brunette graphics. There is no difference in the value.

What's the number stand for that is stamped on left side of Barbie's bottom?

by Kathy
(Southern California)

On my collection of Barbie dolls there is a number stamped on the left bottom side opposite the markings. They range from 7 to 12. Can you tell me what this means?

Hi Kathy -
That is a good question & I do not know the answer. Anyone know?

Stamped Numbers
by: John K.

That is the mold number. Various duplicate molds were used to form the plastic torsos, arms legs etc. Each mold hat it's own number. That way if a default was found in final molded parts the negligent mold could be found and taken out of production.

The numbers mean little to nothing for collectors wishing to identify bodies.

(Thanks John!)

Hard to tell from the pic, my guess is she's either a #5 or a #6. Can you post an upclose pic of her face? Thanx :)

Question About Vintage Barbie Dolls & Value

by e montgomery
(vancouver bc canada)

i have these 2 dolls and am curious as to if they are saleable or shall i give them away. the red hair is marked 1962, japan, solid body and the black hair is marked MCMLVIII, japan, solid body, ear holes but no earrings.

These are DEFINITELY saleable! The red head is a Vintage Midge Doll and the Brunette is a Vintage Ponytail Barbie.
They look like they have been loved & played with - but many collectors love to get dolls like these and then restore them to the original beauty by re-styling their hair and touching up their "make-up"!

by: bemonty

Thanks for your comment, they were well played with but have no extreme damage. what do you think they are worth, ballpark...? is the dark haired one a "ponytail barbie?"

(I don't know about the values - check the completed listings on eBay for a guide. The dark haired one is the ponytail.)

Barbie Doll Question - No T.M. or R after Barbie on bottom. It is a #2

by Kim Morgan
(Florida)

Everything says it is a number two- according to your wonderful explanation of Barbies! See picture.
This was my friends - she is only owner all her life, as you can see she chopped of hair, as she rather put wigs on Barbie! LOLOL - Has white eyes Arched brows etc, But this Marking on Bottoms eludes me?
See picture but it reads...Barbie/ Pats Pend/@MCMLVIII/by/Mattel/Inc. AND other right cheek it has a 67.

Barbara says she got it when it first came out her sister got hers a couple months earlier, (that one is on its way to me) She cut her hair off too! Good Lord. Anyway I am going to sell them along with all there clothes But I just cant say for sure what this is because that marking.
MANY MANY THANKS-

Hi Kim -
If she has white irises & no holes in her feet, she would have to be a #2. All of the "Barbie only" (before Midge was added) had the same markings. I don't think I have seen one without the TM - but remember they were making toys not collectibles & there are many, many variations from the standard. Sounds like you got a winner!

Hair has Been Cut off
by: Kim Morgan

What I do about the hair? As I said it is all cut off? Will people still want to buy her? Thank you

Yes - depending how bad it is - if it can be disguised with a hat (one of the favorites in my collection is a #3 with a chopped off ponytail - she always wears hats!) - or if it is really bad she can be re-rooted by a restorationist.

My mom's Barbie dolls

by Jennifer Timoneri
(North Royalton, OH USA)

My mom's barbie dolls

My mom's barbie dolls

The Brunette has blue eyes, painted nails, lipstick and dark eyeliner. On her right butt cheek it says " TM Midge 1962 Barbie 1963 (but could be a 8) by Mattel Co. Patiented."

The blonde has blue eyes, freckles, painted nails, lipstick and brown eyeliner. On her right butt cheek it says the same as the doll above. I really cant tell if that last date is 1963 or 1968.

They have no earrings but holes under their earlobes where earings might have been.

I would just like to get them a little cleaned up and back in their original outfits.

Thank you for your help,

Jenny

Hi Jenny -
The Brunette is a Bubblecut Barbie, the Blonde is a Midge. Midge is wearing the original outfit from Tammy (it is on backwards - the snaps go in the back!)
